Biography of Mu'awiyah ibn Suwayd

٨٠٨٨- Mu'awiyah ibn Suwayd:

Ibn Muqarrin al-Muzani «١», Abu Suwayd al-Kufi.

The mention of his father has preceded under the letter sin (unpointed), and he will be mentioned under al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin.

He is well known among the Successors (Tabi'in), and his hadith on the authority of his father, and on the authority of al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, is in Sahih Muslim and elsewhere.

Abu Ya'la, and al-Hasan ibn Sufyan, and al-Baghawi, and Ibn al-Sakan mentioned him among the Companions, and they related, by way of Abu Zubayd, on the authority of Mutarrif, on the authority of al-Sha'bi, on his authority, he said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and his family and grant him peace, said: «When a man says to his brother, 'O disbeliever,' then one of the two of them has incurred it»

«٢» [....].

And al-Baghawi also related, by way of Mutarrif, on the authority of Abu al-Safar, on the authority of Mu'awiyah ibn Suwayd, he said: We Banu Muqarrin had a slave-boy whom one of us slapped, so he came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and his family and grant him peace, and complained to him, so he freed him, and it was said: O Messenger of Allah, they have no servant other than him, so he said: Then let him serve them until they become free of need.

Thus did al-Nasa'i likewise relate it by this route. And this hadith was related by Muslim and the authors of the Sunan, from the narration of Hilal ibn Yasaf, and from the narration of Salm ibn Kuhayl, and others, all of them on his authority, on the authority of his father, he said: We Banu Muqarrin were ... and he mentioned the story ... the hadith, so it is as if there occurred in the aforementioned narration a shortcoming on the part of some of the narrators.

And al-Nasa'i related it according to the difference (of versions), but he did not point it out, as is his custom; he only mentioned a difference concerning Mutarrif in the intermediary between him and Mu'awiyah ibn Suwayd in it, and he said: The statement of one who said "on the authority of Abu al-Safar" is closer to correct.

Ibn Abi Hatim al-Razi said: His hadith is mursal (with a broken chain). And Abu Ahmad al-'Askari said: They do not authenticate his hearing (from the Prophet), and his narration is mursal.

And Ibn Hibban and al-'Ijli mentioned him among the trustworthy ones of the Successors; also narrated from him Salamah ibn Kuhayl, and 'Amr ibn Murrah, and Ash'ath ibn Abi al-Sha'tha', and others.
