In language: risk. It has been said that its origin is diminution, from the Arabs' saying "the she-camel has dried up" (gharat an-naqa) when her milk decreases; and it is that whose outcome is unknown, to the point that one does not know whether it will occur or not, and which wavers between being obtained and being lost.
With taghrir and taghra: its exposure to ruin. Also: the boy: his first teeth have come through. Al-agharr: the white one, (pl.) ghurr; and, of men: the noble one.
At-taghrir: taking risks and being heedless of the outcome of the matter. In the Majalla (art. 164): describing the sold item to the buyer otherwise than according to its true quality.
With fatha: risk, which falls under gharar; from it comes the prohibition of the sale of gharar: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the sale of gharar and the sale by pebble (bay' al-hasat). Narrated by at-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith, Kitab al-Buyu', chapter 17; and by Ibn Majah in his Sunan, Kitab at-Tijarat, chapter 23, 2/739.
