Biography of Tha'labah ibn Hatib
931- Tha'laba ibn Hatib:
Or Ibn Abi Hatib al-Ansari.
Ibn Ishaq mentioned him among those who built the Mosque of Dissension (Masjid al-Dirar).
al-Bawardi, Ibn al-Sakan, Ibn Shahin, and others reported in the biography of the one before him, by way of Ma'an ibn Rifa'a, on the authority of 'Ali ibn Zayd, on the authority of al-Qasim, on the authority of Abu Umama, that Tha'laba ibn Hatib al-Ansari said: O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to provide me with wealth. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: «A little for which you render thanks is better than much which you cannot bear..» [ (4) ] .
He then related the hadith in its full length concerning the Prophet's supplication, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for him, the abundance of his wealth, his withholding of the sadaqa, and the revelation of the saying of Allah Most High: And among them is he who made a covenant with Allah, that if He gives us of His bounty... [al-Tawba: 75] the verse.
And in it is that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died and did not take the sadaqa from him, nor did Abu Bakr, nor 'Umar, and that he died in the caliphate of 'Uthman.
As for whether the subject of this story, if the report is sound, and I do not think it is sound, is the man of Badr mentioned before him, there is some doubt about it, and the distinction between the two has been confirmed; Ibn al-Kalbi says: that the man of Badr was martyred at Uhud, and what also strengthens this is that Ibn Mardawayh reported in his commentary, by way of 'Atiyya, on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas concerning the verse mentioned.
He said: and that was because a man called Tha'laba ibn Abi Hatib of the Ansar came to a gathering and called them to witness, and said:

If He gives us of His bounty [al-Tawba: 75] the verse. He then related the story in its full length, and said: that he is Tha'laba ibn Abi Hatib. As for the man of Badr, they agreed that he is Tha'laba ibn Hatib,
And it has been established that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: «No one who witnessed Badr and al-Hudaybiya will enter the Fire»
[ (1) ] .
And it has been related from his Lord that He said to the people of Badr: «Do whatever you wish, for I have forgiven you» [ (2) ] .
So how could one who is in this rank be requited by Allah with hypocrisy in his heart, and have revealed concerning him what was revealed? So the apparent fact is that he is someone else. And Allah knows best.
He will come under Ibn Zayd.
