Biography of Surakah ibn Ka'b

Suraqah ibn Ka'b

Ibn 'Amr ibn 'Abd al-'Uzza ibn Ghaziyyah ibn 'Amr ibn 'Abd ibn 'Awf ibn Ghanm, and his mother was 'Umayrah bint al-Nu'man ibn Zayd ibn Labid ibn Khidash of the Banu 'Adi ibn al-Najjar. Suraqah had among his children Zayd, who was killed on the day of the bridge of Abi 'Ubayd at al-Qadisiyyah, and Su'da, who is Umm Hakim, whose mother was Umm Zayd bint Sakan ibn 'Utbah ibn 'Amr ibn Khadij ibn 'Amir ibn Jusham ibn al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj, and Na'ilah, whose mother was a slave-mother. Thus did Abu Ma'shar and Muhammad ibn 'Umar and 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Umarah al-Ansari say in the lineage of Suraqah, "'Abd al-'Uzza ibn Ghaziyyah," and in the narration of Ibrahim ibn Sa'd, on the authority of Muhammad ibn Ishaq: "'Abd al-'Uzza ibn 'Urwah," and in the narration of Harun ibn Abi 'Isa, on the authority of Muhammad ibn Ishaq: "'Abd al-'Uzza ibn 'Azrah," and both are an error; it is only "'Abd al-'Uzza ibn Ghaziyyah." Suraqah ibn Ka'b was present at Badr and Uhud and the Trench and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He died during the caliphate of Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan and left no progeny.

Harithah ibn al-Nu'man

Ibn Naf' ibn Zayd ibn 'Ubayd ibn Tha'labah ibn Ghanm, and his mother was Ja'dah bint 'Ubayd ibn Tha'labah ibn 'Ubayd ibn Tha'labah ibn Ghanm. Harithah had among his children 'Abd Allah and 'Abd al-Rahman and Sawdah, who was among those who gave the pledge, and 'Amrah, who was also among those who gave the pledge, and Umm Hisham, who was also among those who gave the pledge, whose mother was Umm Khalid bint Khalid ibn Ya'ish ibn Qays ibn 'Amr ibn Zayd Manat ibn 'Adi ibn 'Amr ibn Malik ibn al-Najjar, and Umm Kulthum, whose mother was of the Banu 'Abd Allah ibn Ghatafan, and Amat Allah, whose mother was of the Banu Jad'a'; and the kunyah of Harithah was Abu 'Abd Allah, and Harithah was present at Badr and Uhud and the Trench and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. Harithah said: And I saw Jibril, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, twice in my lifetime: on the day of al-Surayn, when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went out to the Banu Qurayzah, when he passed by us in the form of Dihyah ibn Khalifah al-Kalbi and ordered us to put on weapons; and on the day of the place of the biers, when we returned from Hunayn, I passed while he was speaking to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and I did not greet him; so Jibril said: Who is this, O Muhammad? He said: Harithah ibn al-Nu'man, he said: Indeed he is among the hundred who were steadfast on the day of Hunayn, those whose sustenance Allah has guaranteed in Paradise; and had he greeted, we would have returned the greeting to him.

'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yunus informed us, he said: Muhammad ibn Isma'il ibn Abi Fudayk informed us, he said: Muhammad ibn 'Uthman narrated to me, on the authority of his father, that Harithah ibn al-Nu'man had lost his sight, so he made a cord from his place of prayer to the door of his room and placed by it a basket containing dates and other things; and when a poor person gave the greeting he would take some of those dates, then take hold of the cord until he reached the door of the room and hand it to the poor person, and his family used to say: We will suffice you, and he would say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: Handing to the poor person wards off an evil death. Muhammad ibn 'Umar said: Harithah ibn al-Nu'man had dwellings near the dwellings of the Prophet, peace be upon him, at Medina, and whenever the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, took a new family member, Harithah ibn al-Nu'man would move out of one dwelling after another for him, until the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: I have indeed felt shame before Harithah ibn al-Nu'man for what he keeps moving out of his dwellings for us. Harithah remained until he died during the caliphate of Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, may Allah have mercy on him, and he has progeny among his descendants: Abu al-Rijal, whose name is Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Harithah ibn al-Nu'man; and the mother of Abu al-Rijal was 'Amrah bint 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Sa'd ibn Zurarah of the Banu al-Najjar.
