Biography of Salim mawla Abi Hudhayfah
He said: Muhammad ibn 'Umar informed us, he said: 'Abd al-Jabbar ibn 'Umarah informed us, he said: I heard 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn Hazm say, and Muhammad ibn 'Umar informed us, on the authority of Musa ibn Ya'qub, from Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr, who said: When Abu Hudhayfah ibn 'Utbah and Salim the client (mawla) of Abi Hudhayfah emigrated from Mecca to Medina, they lodged with 'Abbad ibn Bishr, and they were both killed at al-Yamamah.
They said: And the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, established brotherhood between Abu Hudhayfah and 'Abbad ibn Bishr.
He said: Muhammad ibn 'Umar informed us, he said: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad narrated to me, on the authority of his father, who said: Abu Hudhayfah was present at Badr and called his father 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah out to single combat, and his sister Hind bint 'Utbah said, when he called his father out to single combat:
The cross-eyed one, the buck-toothed one, whose omen brings misfortune … Abu Hudhayfah is the worst of people in religion. Did you not show gratitude to a father who raised you from smallness … until you grew up into a youth not bent [with weakness]? He said: Abu Hudhayfah was a tall man, handsome of face, with protruding teeth, and that is what "al-ath'al" means, and he was cross-eyed; and he was also present at Uhud, al-Khandaq, and all the [battle] scenes alongside the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he was killed on the day of al-Yamamah in the year twelve, when he was fifty-three or fifty-four years old, and that was during the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him.
Salim the client of Abi Hudhayfah
ibn 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah; in the narration of Musa ibn 'Uqbah, Salim ibn Ma'qil, from the people of Istakhr, and he was the client of Thubaytah bint Ya'ar al-Ansariyyah, then one of the Banu 'Ubayd ibn Zayd ibn Malik ibn 'Awf ibn 'Amr ibn 'Awf of the Aws, the clan of Unays ibn Qatadah; so Salim is mentioned among the Ansar in the Banu 'Ubayd on account of Thubaytah bint Ya'ar freeing him, and he is mentioned among the Emigrants on account of his clientage to Abu Hudhayfah.
He said: Muhammad ibn 'Umar informed us, he said: Ibrahim ibn Isma'il ibn Abi Habibah narrated to me, on the authority of Dawud ibn al-Husayn, from Abi Sufyan, who said: Salim belonged to Thubaytah bint Ya'ar al-Ansariyyah, and she was married to Abu Hudhayfah, so she freed him as a sa'ibah [an unconditional freeing], and he took Abu Hudhayfah as his patron, and Abu Hudhayfah adopted him, so he used to be called Salim ibn Abi Hudhayfah. The wife of Abu Hudhayfah, Sahlah bint Suhayl ibn 'Amr, said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, after this verse had been revealed: Call them by [the names of] their fathers, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, Salim was to us as a son, he said: Then suckle him five sucklings [and] he may enter upon you, she said: So I suckled him while he was grown. And Abu Hudhayfah married him to the daughter of his brother, Fatimah bint al-Walid ibn 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah; and when he was killed on the day of al-Yamamah, Abu Bakr sent his inheritance to his patroness, but she refused to accept it, then 'Umar sent it, but she refused and said: I freed him for the sake of Allah, so 'Umar placed it in the treasury (bayt al-mal).
Muhammad ibn 'Umar said: I related this hadith to Ibn Abi Dhi'b, and he said: Yazid ibn Abi Habib informed me, on the authority of Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, who said: Salim was a sa'ibah, so he bequeathed a third of his wealth for the sake of Allah, a third of it for [freeing] slaves, and a third of it for his clients.
He said: 'Arim ibn al-Fadl informed us, he said: Hammad ibn Zayd informed us, on the authority of Ayyub, from Muhammad, that Salim the client of Abi Hudhayfah was freed by a woman of the Ansar as a sa'ibah, and she said: Take as patron whomever you wish; so he took Abu Hudhayfah ibn 'Utbah as his patron, and he used to enter upon his [Abu Hudhayfah's] wife, so she mentioned that to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and she said: I see [something of disapproval of] that in the face of Abu Hudhayfah, he said: Suckle him, she said: But he has a beard, he said: I know that he has a beard. He said: Then he was killed on the day of al-Yamamah, and his inheritance was handed over to the woman.

He said: Muhammad ibn 'Umar informed us, 'Abd al-Hamid ibn 'Imran ibn Abi Anas narrated to me, on the authority of his father, who said: I heard Ibn 'Umar saying: Salim the client of Abi Hudhayfah came forward on the day of the Emigrants from Mecca until he reached Medina, because he was the best reciter of the Qur'an among them.

He said: Anas ibn 'Iyad and 'Abd Allah ibn Numayr informed us, on the authority of 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Umar, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, that the first Emigrants, when they arrived from Mecca to Medina, lodged at al-'Usbah beside Quba', and Salim the client of Abi Hudhayfah led them, because he was the one with the most Qur'an among them, 'Abd Allah ibn Numayr said in his hadith: Among them were 'Umar ibn al-Khattab and Abu Salamah ibn 'Abd al-Asad.

So he dug a pit for himself and stood in it, and with him was the banner of the Emigrants on that day, and he fought until he was killed, may Allah have mercy upon him, on the day of al-Yamamah as a martyr, in the year twelve, and that was during the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq.
Muhammad ibn 'Umar said: Someone other than Yunus ibn Muhammad al-Zafari says in this hadith: The head of Salim was found at the feet of Abu Hudhayfah, or the head of Abu Hudhayfah at the feet of Salim.
He said: Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir informed us, he said: Abu Ishaq, that is al-Shaybani, informed us, on the authority of 'Ubayd ibn Abi al-Ja'd, from 'Abd Allah ibn Shaddad ibn al-Had, that Salim the client of Abi Hudhayfah was killed on the day of al-Yamamah, so 'Umar sold his inheritance, and it amounted to two hundred dirhams, and he gave it to his mother and said: Consume it.
