Biography of Sa'd ibn Malik al-'adhri

Sa'd ibn 'Uthman was among those who fled on the Day of Uhud, he and his brother 'Uqba ibn 'Uthman and 'Uthman ibn 'Affan. We have mentioned the account concerning them in the entry of 'Uqba ibn 'Uthman in this register (١). Concerning those who fled on the Day of Uhud, the following verse was revealed: ﴿Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met - it was only Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned. But Allah has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing. (١٥٥)﴾ [Al 'Imran: 155].

[٢٣٣٢] Sa'd ibn Malik al-'Udhri (٢) came in the delegation of 'Udhrah to the Prophet ﷺ.

[٢٣٣٣] Sa'd ibn Zayd al-Ansari al-Ashhali (٣). Ibn Ishaq (٤) said: he is Sa'd ibn Zayd (٥) ibn Malik ibn 'Ubayd ibn Ka'b ibn 'Abd al-Ashhal; he was present at Badr. Others besides Ibn Ishaq said: he is Sa'd ibn Zayd ibn 'Amir (٦) ibn 'Amr (١) ibn Jushum ibn al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj, and he was not present at Badr. [The correct view is that he was from Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal and was present at Badr and the battles thereafter] (٢). It was also said: he is Sa'd ibn Zayd ibn Sa'd al-Ashhali, who was present at al-'Aqaba according to al-Waqidi exclusively (٣), while others hold that he was present at Badr and (٤) all the subsequent military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Abu 'Umar said: There is uncertainty in this matter; I believe these are two different individuals. This Sa'd ibn Zayd al-Ansari is the one whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched with a portion of the captives of the Banu Qurayza to Najd, where he purchased [horses and weapons with them] (٥). He is also the one who demolished the idol-shrine that stood at al-Mushalhal (٦) belonging to the Aws and Khazraj.

Sa'd ibn Zayd al-Ansari transmitted one hadith regarding sitting out of civil strife (٧). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ established a bond of brotherhood between 'Amr ibn Suraqa and Sa'd ibn Zayd al-Ansari. Sulayman ibn Muhammad ibn Maslama transmitted from one of the two of them; he is counted among the people of Medina. Sa'd ibn Zayd al-Ta'i, who transmitted the story of the Ghifariyya woman, is a different person from both of them, and I have mentioned him in an earlier section. Although it has been said regarding that: [that he too was an Ansari] (٨).
