Biography of Fatima bint al-Khattab
Fatima bint al-Khattab ibn Nufayl, the sister of 'Umar, whose kunya was Umm Jamil, was the wife of Sa'id ibn Zayd, and she embraced Islam before 'Umar. She is mentioned in connection with 'Umar's conversion. 7789 - Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Hasan related to us: Muhammad ibn 'Uthman ibn Abi Shayba related to us: 'Abd al-Hamid ibn Salih related to us: Muhammad ibn Aban related to us, on the authority of Ishaq ibn 'Abd Allah, on the authority of Aban ibn Salih, on the authority of Mujahid, on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas, who said: I asked 'Umar about his conversion to Islam, and he said: "I went out three days after the conversion of Hamza, ⦗٣٤١١⦘ and I encountered so-and-so the son of so-and-so al-Makhzumi, and I said to him: Have you turned away from the religion of your forefathers and followed the religion of Muhammad? He said: If I have done so, then one whose right over you is greater than mine has done the same. He said: I said: And who is that? He said: Your sister and your brother-in-law. He said: So I set off and found the door locked, and I heard a murmuring. He said: The door was opened for me and I entered, and I said: What is this that I am hearing from you? They said: You heard nothing. The exchange between me and them continued until I seized my brother-in-law by the head and struck him a blow that drew blood. Then my sister rose toward me and took hold of my head, and she said: That has happened in spite of you. He said: I felt ashamed when I saw the blood, so I sat down and said: Show me this scripture. My sister said: None may touch it save those who are purified; if you are sincere, then rise and perform a ritual bath. He said: So I rose, performed a ritual bath, and came and sat down, and they brought out to me a sheet on which was written: «In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful», and I said: These are pure and blessed names: {Ta Ha. We have not sent down the Quran upon you that you should be in distress} [Ta Ha: 2] up to His words: {To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names} [Ta Ha: 8] - these words grew great within my breast, and I said: Is this what Quraysh has been fleeing from? Then my breast was opened to Islam, and I said: {Allah - there is no deity except Him; to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names} [Ta Ha: 8]. He said: At that moment there was no soul upon the earth more beloved to me than the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). I said: Where is the Messenger of Allah? She said: You must give your oath and covenant to Allah that you will not harm him with anything he would dislike. I said: Yes. She said: He is in the house of Arqam ibn Abi al-Arqam, a house near al-Safa. So I went to the house and declared my Islam." The hadith in its entirety. 7790 - Abu 'Amr ibn Hamdan related to us: al-Hasan ibn Sufyan related to us: 'Ali ibn Maymun al-'Attar and al-Hasan al-Bazzar related to us, both saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Hunayniyy related to us: Usama ibn Zayd ibn Aslam related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather, who said: 'Umar said to us, and he mentioned his conversion to Islam, saying: "A man said to me: How strange it is with you, O son of al-Khattab - this matter has entered your own house. I said: How so? He said: Your sister has gone astray. So I returned in anger and knocked on the door. They were reciting from a book they held in their hands, and when they heard ⦗٣٤١٢⦘ my voice they rose and hid themselves in a place, leaving the book as it was. When my sister opened the door for me, I said: O enemy of herself, have you gone astray? I raised something in my hand and struck her on the head with it, and blood rushed out and flowed down her head. She wept and said: O son of al-Khattab, do whatever you intend - for I have already embraced Islam. So I sat down on the bed, and there was a sheet in the middle of the room. I said: What is this sheet doing here? He said: Leave us alone, O son of al-Khattab - you have not performed a ritual bath from major impurity and you are not in a state of purity, and this may not be touched except by those who are purified. And he mentioned his conversion to Islam."
7791 - Habib ibn al-Hasan related to us: Muhammad ibn Yahya related to us: Ahmad ibn Muhammad related to us: Ibrahim ibn Sa'd related to us, on the authority of Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: "As for 'Umar's conversion to Islam, what has reached me is that his sister Fatima bint al-Khattab was the wife of Sa'id ibn Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl. She had already embraced Islam, and her husband Sa'id ibn Zayd had likewise embraced Islam. 'Umar came to the two of them while Khabbab ibn al-Aratt was with them, holding a sheet on which was written {Ta Ha} [Ta Ha: 1], and he was teaching it to them. When they sensed 'Umar's presence, Khabbab concealed himself, and Fatima bint al-Khattab took the sheet and placed it beneath her thigh. When 'Umar entered he said: What is this murmuring I heard? They said to him: You heard nothing. He said: By Allah, I have indeed been informed that the two of you have followed Muhammad in his religion. And he seized his brother-in-law Sa'id ibn Zayd, whereupon his sister Fatima rose to restrain him, and he struck her and wounded her head. When he did that, his sister and his brother-in-law said to him: Yes, we have embraced Islam and we believe in Allah and His Messenger - do as you will." And the account is cited. 7791 - It was also narrated by Muhammad ibn 'Umar al-Waqidi, on the authority of Fatima bint Muslim al-Ashja'iyya, on the authority of Fatima al-Khuza'iyya, on the authority of Fatima bint al-Khattab, who heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: «My community will continue in good so long as love of this world does not appear among them through corrupt scholars, ignorant reciters, and tyrants. When these appear, I fear that Allah will encompass them all in punishment.»
