Biography of Amir ibn Abdullah ibn al-Jarrah

(b d ') Amir ibn Abdullah ibn al-Jarrah ibn Hilal ibn Uhayb ibn Dabba ibn al-Harith ibn Fihr ibn Malik ibn al-Nadr ibn Kinana ibn Khuzayma, Abu Ubayda; he became renowned by his kunya, and his lineage was ascribed to his grandfather, so it is said:

Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah.

And he is one of the ten to whom Paradise was testified, and he witnessed Badr, Uhud, and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he is among the forerunners to Islam, and he emigrated to Abyssinia and to Medina as well, and he was called the Strong, the Trustworthy.

And he was gap-toothed, and the cause of that was that he pulled out the two rings of the helmet (١) that had entered the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Uhud, so his two front teeth were pulled out, and they beautified his mouth, and no gap-toothed person was ever seen more handsome than him.

And Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said to him on the day of the Saqifa: «I am content for you with one of these two men: Umar ibn al-Khattab and Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah».

And he was one of the commanders dispatched to al-Sham, and among those who conquered Damascus, and when Umar ibn al-Khattab assumed the caliphate he removed Khalid ibn al-Walid and appointed Abu Ubayda, so Khalid said: The Trustworthy One of this community has been set over you. And Abu Ubayda said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: «Indeed Khalid is a sword among the swords of Allah».

And when Abu Ubayda was at Badr on the day of the battle, his father began to confront him, and Abu Ubayda began to turn aside from him, but when his father increased in pressing toward him, Abu Ubayda killed him, so Allah Most High revealed: ﴿You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they be their fathers or their sons﴾ (٢) the verse. And al-Waqidi used to deny this, and he would say: the father of Abu Ubayda died before Islam, but some of the people of knowledge rejected the statement of al-Waqidi.

Isma'il ibn Ali ibn Ubaydullah and others informed us, they said, with their chain to Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi, he said:

Abdullah ibn Mu'awiya al-Jumahi narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us, on the authority of Khalid al-Hadhdha', on the authority of Abdullah ibn Shaqiq, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Suraqa, on the authority of Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: «Indeed there was no prophet after Nuh except that he warned his people of the Dajjal, and indeed I warn you of him». So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ described him to us, and he said: «Perhaps some of those who have seen me and heard my speech will live to encounter him. They said: O Messenger of Allah, how will our hearts be on that day? He said: The same as they are - meaning today - or better (١).

Abu al-Fadl al-Makhzumi al-Tabari informed us, with his chain to Abu Ya'la Ahmad ibn Ali, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shayba and Abu Khaythama narrated to us, they said: Isma'il ibn Ulayya narrated to us, on the authority of Khalid, on the authority of Abu Qilaba, he said: Anas said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: For every community there is a trustworthy one, and indeed our trustworthy one, O community, is Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah.

Abu al-Fadl Abdullah ibn Ahmad al-Khatib informed us, Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Badran al-Hulwani informed us, the judge Abu al-Tayyib al-Tabari informed us, Abu Ahmad al-Ghitrifi informed us, Abu Khalifa al-Jumahi informed us, Sulayman ibn Harb informed us, Shu'ba narrated to us, on the authority of Khalid al-Hadhdha', on the authority of Abu Qilaba, on the authority of Anas:

that he said: «For every community there is a trustworthy one, and the trustworthy one of this community is Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah (٢)».

And when Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah emigrated to Medina, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established brotherhood between him and Abu Talha al-Ansari.

And Abu Muhammad ibn Abi al-Qasim ibn Asakir al-Dimashqi informed us, by license, my father informed us, Abu Ghalib ibn al-Muthanna informed us, Abu Muhammad al-Jawhari narrated to us, Abu Umar ibn Hayawayh and Abu Bakr ibn Isma'il informed us, they said: Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak informed us, Ma'mar narrated to us, on the authority of Hisham ibn Urwa, on the authority of his father, he said: Umar ibn al-Khattab came to al-Sham, and the commanders of the troops and the great ones of the people of the land met him, so Umar said: Where is my brother? They said: Who? He said: Abu Ubayda. They said: He will come to you now. He said: So he came upon a she-camel haltered with a rope, and he greeted him and asked after him, then he said to the people: Depart from us. So he traveled with him until he reached his dwelling, and he alighted with him, and he saw in his house nothing but his sword and his shield [and his saddle] (٣), so Umar said: Would that you had acquired some furnishings? Or he said: something. Abu Ubayda said: O Commander of the Believers, this will suffice to convey us to the resting place.

He said: And Ma'mar narrated to us, on the authority of Qatada, he said: Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah said: «I would love that I were a ram which my family would slaughter and eat my flesh and sip my broth».

He said: And Imran ibn Husayn said: «I would love that I were ashes which the wind would scatter upon a stormy, blustering day».

And there transmitted from him al-Irbad ibn Sariya, Jabir ibn Abdullah, Abu Umama al-Bahili, Abu Tha'laba al-Khushani, Samura ibn Jundab, and others.

And Urwa ibn al-Zubayr said: When the plague descended, it spared those of the household of Abu Ubayda who were healthy, and his family, so he said:

«O Allah, take Your portion in the household of Abu Ubayda. He said: So there broke out on Abu Ubayda a pustule on his little finger, and he began to look at it, and it was said to him: It is nothing, so he said: Indeed I hope that Allah will bless me in it, for when He blesses in the little it becomes much.» And Urwa ibn Ruwaym said: Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah set out intending to pray at Bayt al-Maqdis, but his appointed term overtook him at Fihl (١), so he died there. And it is said: his grave is at Baysan, and it is said: he died at Amwas in the year eighteen, his age being fifty-eight years.

And he used to dye his head and beard with henna and katam.

And between Amwas and al-Ramla there are four farsakhs in the direction of Bayt al-Maqdis, and the offspring of Abu Ubayda have died out, and when death came upon him he appointed Mu'adh ibn Jabal as successor over the people.

The three transmitted it.
