Biography of az-Zubayr ibn al-Awam

Ibn Khuwaylid ibn Asad ibn Abd al-Uzza ibn Qusayy, and his mother was Safiyya bint Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim ibn Abd Manaf ibn Qusayy.

They said: az-Zubayr had eleven male children and nine females: Abd Allah, Urwa, al-Mundhir, Asim, and al-Muhajir who died young, and Khadija the elder, Umm al-Hasan, and Aisha, whose mother was Asma bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq; and Khalid, Amr, Habiba, Sawda, and Hind, whose mother was Umm Khalid, who was Ama bint Khalid ibn Said ibn al-As ibn Umayya; and Musab, Hamza, and Ramla, whose mother was ar-Rabab bint Unayf ibn Ubayd ibn Misad ibn Kab ibn Ulaym ibn Janab from Kalb; and Ubayda and Jafar, whose mother was Zaynab, who was Umm Jafar bint Marthad ibn Amr ibn Abd Amr ibn Bishr ibn Amr ibn Marthad ibn Sad ibn Malik ibn Dubaya ibn Qays ibn Thalaba; and Zaynab, whose mother was Umm Kulthum bint Uqba ibn Abi Muayt; and Khadija the younger, whose mother was al-Hilal bint Qays ibn Nawfal ibn Jabir ibn Shajna ibn Usama ibn Malik ibn Nasr ibn Quayn from the Banu Asad.

Do you think our debt will leave anything of our property? Then he said: O my son, sell our property and settle my debt, and bequeath a third; and if anything remains of our property after the settlement of the debt, then a third of it is for your children. Hisham said: Some of the children of Abd Allah ibn az-Zubayr were of an age equal to some of the sons of az-Zubayr, namely Khubayb and Abbad. He said: And on that day he had nine daughters. Abd Allah ibn az-Zubayr said: He began to enjoin me concerning his debt, saying: O my son, if you are unable to manage any part of it, then seek the help of my Master in it. He said: By Allah, I did not know what he meant until I said: O my father, who is your Master? He said: Allah. He said: By Allah, I never fell into any distress on account of his debt but that I said: O Master of az-Zubayr, settle his debt for him, and He would settle it. He said: And az-Zubayr was killed, and he left neither a dinar nor a dirham, except lands among which was al-Ghaba, and eleven houses in Medina, and two houses in Basra, and a house in Kufa, and a house in Egypt. He said: His debt that was upon him came about only because a man would come to him with money to deposit it with him, and az-Zubayr would say: No, but it is a loan, for I fear loss for it. And he never held a governorship at all, nor a collection of revenue, nor a land tax, nor anything, except when he was on a campaign with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and with Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman.

Abd Allah ibn az-Zubayr said: So I reckoned the debt that was upon him, and I found it to be two million two hundred thousand. Hakim ibn Hizam met Abd Allah ibn az-Zubayr and said: O son of my brother, how much debt is upon my brother? He said: So he concealed it from him and said: One hundred thousand. Hakim said: By Allah, I do not think your properties can cover this. So Abd Allah said to him: What do you think if it were two million two hundred thousand? He said: I do not think you can bear this; so if you are unable to manage any part of it, then seek my help.

az-Zubayr had bought al-Ghaba for one hundred and seventy thousand, and Abd Allah ibn az-Zubayr sold it for one million six hundred thousand, then he stood up and said: Whoever has any claim upon az-Zubayr, let him come to us at al-Ghaba. He said: So Abd Allah ibn Jafar came to him, and he had a claim of four hundred thousand upon az-Zubayr, and he said to Abd Allah ibn az-Zubayr: If you wish, I will leave it to you, and if you wish, defer it among what you defer, if you defer anything. Abd Allah ibn az-Zubayr said: No. He said: Then mark off a portion for me. So Abd Allah said to him: You have from here to here. He said: So he sold him part of it in settlement of his debt and paid him in full, and there remained of it four shares and a half.

He said: Then he came to Muawiya, and with him were Amr ibn Uthman, al-Mundhir ibn az-Zubayr, and Ibn Zama. He said: So Muawiya said to him: At how much was al-Ghaba valued? He said: Each share at one hundred thousand. He said: How much remains? He said: Four shares and a half. He said: So al-Mundhir ibn az-Zubayr said: I have taken a share for one hundred thousand. And Amr ibn Uthman said: I have taken a share for one hundred thousand. And Ibn Zama said: I have taken a share for one hundred thousand. So Muawiya said: How much remains? He said: A share and a half. He said: I have taken it for one hundred and fifty thousand.

He said: And Abd Allah ibn Jafar sold his portion to Muawiya for six hundred thousand. When Ibn az-Zubayr had finished settling his debt, the sons of az-Zubayr said: Divide our inheritance among us. He said: No, by Allah, I will not divide it among you until I have proclaimed at the pilgrimage season for four years: Behold, whoever has a debt against az-Zubayr, let him come to us that we may settle it. He said: So every year he would proclaim at the pilgrimage season, and when four years had passed, he divided it among them. He said: And az-Zubayr had four wives, and he set aside a quarter of the eighth, so each woman received one million one hundred thousand. He said: So the whole of his property was thirty-five million two hundred thousand.

He said: So az-Zubayr turned back, and Ibn Jurmuz met him and killed him, so Ibn Abbas came to Ali and said: To where does the killer of the son of Safiyya go? Ali said: To the Fire.

He said: al-Fadl ibn Dukayn informed us, he said: Imran ibn Zaida ibn Nashit informed us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Khalid, that is, al-Walibi, who said: al-Ahnaf called upon the Banu Tamim, but they did not answer him; then he called upon the Banu Sad, but they did not answer him; so he withdrew with a band of men. Then az-Zubayr passed by on a horse of his called Dhu an-Nial, so al-Ahnaf said: This is the one who used to sow discord among the people. He said: So two men of those who were with him followed him, and one of them charged at him and pierced him, and the other charged at him and killed him, and he came with his head to the door and said: Grant permission to the killer of az-Zubayr. Ali heard him and said: Give the killer of the son of Safiyya tidings of the Fire. So he threw it down and went away.

He said: Ubayd Allah ibn Musa informed us, he said: Fudayl ibn Marzuq informed us, he said: Sufyan ibn Uqba related to me, on the authority of Qurra ibn al-Harith, on the authority of Jawn ibn Qatada, who said: I was with az-Zubayr ibn al-Awam on the day of the Camel, and they used to salute him as commander. A horseman came riding and said: Peace be upon you, O commander. Then he informed him of something. Then another came and did the like of that. Then another came and did the like of that. When the two parties met and az-Zubayr saw what he saw, he said: Oh, my nose is cut off! or: Oh, my back is broken! Fudayl said: I do not know which of the two he said. Then a trembling seized him, he said: So his weapon began to fall away, Jawn said: So I said: May my mother be bereaved of me! Is this the one with whom I wished to die? By Him in whose hand is my soul, I see this only as resulting from something he heard or saw, for he is the horseman of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. So when the people became occupied, he turned away and sat upon his mount and went off, and Jawn turned away and sat upon his mount and rejoined al-Ahnaf. He said: Then two horsemen came to al-Ahnaf and dismounted and bent over him, conversing with him in confidence, so al-Ahnaf raised his head and said: O Amr, meaning Ibn Jurmuz, O so-and-so. So they came to him and bent over him, and he conversed with them in confidence for a while, then he turned away. Then Amr ibn Jurmuz came after that to al-Ahnaf and said: I caught up with him in Wadi as-Siba and killed him. So Qurra ibn al-Harith ibn al-Jawn used to say: By Him in whose hand is my soul, the companion of az-Zubayr was none but al-Ahnaf.

He said: Abd al-Malik ibn Amr Abu Amir al-Aqadi informed us, he said: al-Aswad ibn Shayban informed us, on the authority of Khalid ibn Sumayr, that he mentioned az-Zubayr in a hadith he related, saying: az-Zubayr rode off, and a man of the Banu Tamim caught up with him at Wadi as-Siba. They said: az-Zubayr ibn al-Awam went out on the day of the Camel, which was a Thursday, ten nights having passed of Jumada al-Akhira in the year thirty-six, after the fighting, upon a horse of his called Dhu al-Khimar, setting off intending to return to Medina, when a man of the Banu Tamim called an-Nair ibn Zammam al-Mujashii met him at Safwan and said to him: O disciple of the Messenger of Allah, to me, to me; for you are under my protection, and no one of the people shall reach you. So he went along with him, and another man of the Banu Tamim came to al-Ahnaf ibn Qays and said to him privately between the two of them: This is az-Zubayr in Wadi as-Siba. So al-Ahnaf raised his voice and said: What can I do, and what do you command me, when az-Zubayr has thrown together two parties (1) of the Muslims so that one of them killed the other, and now he intends to rejoin his family? So Umayr ibn Jurmuz at-Tamimi, Fudala ibn Habis at-Tamimi, and Nufay, or Nufayl, ibn Habis at-Tamimi heard him, and they mounted their horses in pursuit of him and caught up with him. So Umayr ibn Jurmuz charged at him and pierced him with a light thrust, so az-Zubayr charged at him, and when he thought that az-Zubayr would kill him, he called out: O Fudala, O Nufay, then he said: By Allah, by Allah, O Zubayr! So he held back from him; then he went on, and the men charged at him all together and killed him, may Allah have mercy upon him. Umayr ibn Jurmuz pierced him with a thrust that fixed him, and he fell, so they fell upon him and took his sword, and Ibn Jurmuz took his head and carried it until he brought it, along with his sword, to Ali, and Ali took it and said: A sword, by Allah, with which for so long he warded off distress from the face of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace; but it is the appointed fate and the evil places of slaughter. And az-Zubayr, may Allah have mercy upon him, was buried at Wadi as-Siba, and Ali sat weeping over him, he and his companions.

And Atika bint Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl, who was the wife of az-Zubayr ibn al-Awam, said, and the people of Medina used to say: Whoever desires martyrdom, let him marry Atika bint Zayd. She had been the wife of Abd Allah ibn Abi Bakr, and he was killed leaving her a widow; then she was the wife of Umar ibn al-Khattab, and he was killed leaving her a widow; then she was the wife of az-Zubayr, and he was killed leaving her a widow. So she said (2):

Ibn Jurmuz treacherously slew a valiant horseman on the day of the encounter, one who did not flee. O Amr, had you roused him, you would have found him neither faint of heart nor trembling of hand. May your right hand be palsied, for you have killed a Muslim; upon you has fallen the punishment of the deliberate murderer. May your mother be bereaved of you! Have you ever gained the like of him among those who have passed, in whatever you do at evening and morning?

How many a peril he plunged into, whom your skirmishing, O son of the dung of the high ground, never turned away from it. And Jarir ibn al-Khatafa said (1):

Indeed the calamity is what its grave has enclosed; Wadi as-Siba is a place of slaughter for every flank. When the news of az-Zubayr arrived, the walls of Medina and the humbled mountains bowed low. And his daughters wept for az-Zubayr in mourning; but what use is the weeping of one who does not hear!

He said: Muhammad ibn Umar informed us, he said: Ubayd Allah ibn Urwa ibn az-Zubayr informed us, on the authority of his brother Abd Allah ibn Urwa, on the authority of Urwa, who said: My father was killed on the day of the Camel, having exceeded sixty by four years.

He said: Muhammad ibn Umar informed us, he said: I heard Musab ibn Thabit ibn Abd Allah ibn az-Zubayr say: az-Zubayr ibn al-Awam was present at Badr when he was twenty-nine years old, and he was killed when he was sixty-four years old.

He said: Musa ibn Ismail informed us, he said: Jarir ibn Hazim related to me, he said: I heard al-Hasan mention az-Zubayr and say: O wonder at az-Zubayr! He clung to the waist of a Bedouin of the Banu Mujashi, saying: Protect me, protect me, until he was killed. By Allah, he was no match for him. But by Allah, you were under impregnable protection!

He said: Qabisa ibn Uqba informed us, he said: Sufyan informed us, on the authority of Mansur, on the authority of Ibrahim, who said: Ibn Jurmuz came seeking permission to enter upon Ali, and he found him slow to receive him, so he said: What of the people of tribulation? So Ali said: May dust be in your mouth; indeed I hope that I, Talha, and az-Zubayr will be among those of whom Allah said: {And We shall remove whatever rancor is in their breasts; as brothers, upon couches facing one another} [Surat al-Hijr: 47].

He said: Qabisa ibn Uqba informed us, he said: Sufyan informed us, on the authority of Jafar ibn Muhammad, on the authority of his father, who said: Ali said: Indeed I hope that I, Talha, and az-Zubayr will be among those of whom Allah said: {And We shall remove whatever rancor is in their breasts; as brothers, upon couches facing one another} [Surat al-Hijr: 47].
