Biography of Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Uthman

(b d ') Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Uthman. He is Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq ibn Abi Quhafa al-Qurashi al-Taymi. His lineage was given earlier at the mention of his father (6); his kunya is Abu Abdullah, and it is said:

Abu Muhammad, after his son Muhammad who is called: Abu Atiq, and it is said: Abu Uthman; and his mother was Umm Ruman.

He dwelt in Medina, and died at Mecca. And there is not known among the Companions a succession of four (7): a father and his sons after him, each of them the son of the one before him, who accepted Islam and kept company with the Prophet ﷺ except Abu Quhafa, and his son Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, and his son Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, and his son Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman, Abu Atiq (8).

And Abd al-Rahman was the full brother of A'isha. He witnessed Badr and Uhud on the side of the unbelievers, and called for single combat, and Abu Bakr rose to him to duel him,

but the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him: Let me have the benefit of your life.

And he was a brave man, an archer of fine marksmanship; and he accepted Islam during the truce of al-Hudaybiya, and his Islam was excellent.

And his name had been Abd al-Ka'ba, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ named him Abd al-Rahman. And it is said: His name had been Abd al-Uzza.

And he witnessed al-Yamama together with Khalid ibn al-Walid, and he killed seven of their notables. And he is the one who killed Muhakkam al-Yamama ibn Tufayl; he shot him with an arrow in his throat and killed him. And Muhakkam al-Yamama was in a breach in the fortress, and when he was killed the Muslims entered through it.

al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar said: Abd al-Rahman was the eldest of the children of Abu Bakr, and in him was a playfulness; he related from the Prophet ﷺ some hadiths. There related from him: Abu Uthman al-Nahdi, Amr ibn Aws, al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, Musa ibn Wardan, [Maymun ibn Mihran], Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, and others.

Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abi Mansur Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yanal (1) al-Sufi, known as Turk, informed us in writing (2): Abu Muti Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahid ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Misri informed us: Abu Sa'id Muhammad ibn Ali al-Naqqash informed us: Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Ibrahim al-Shafi'i narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Ziyad ibn Mihran al-Adl narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us: Abu Shihab narrated to us, on the authority of Amr ibn Qays, on the authority of Ibn Abi Mulayka: that Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, «Bring me a shoulder-blade and an inkpot, that I may write for you a document after which you will not go astray.» Then he turned his back, then he turned to us and said: Allah and the believers refuse all but Abu Bakr».

al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar related, on the authority of Muhammad ibn al-Dahhak al-Hizami (3), on the authority of his father al-Dahhak, on the authority of Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad, on the authority of Hisham ibn Urwa, on the authority of his father: that Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq came to Syria on a trading venture, and he saw there a woman called: the daughter of al-Judi, and around her were handmaidens, and she pleased him, so he said concerning her (4):

I called to mind Layla (5), with al-Samawa below her … so what has the daughter of al-Judi, Layla, to do with me and I with her? And how shall a woman of Harith offer her heart? … She dwells long (1) at Busra or alights at al-Jawabi. And how shall I meet her? Indeed yes! And perhaps … if the people perform the pilgrimage next year, she may come to meet me. He said: So when Umar ibn al-Khattab sent his army to Syria he said to the commander of the army: If you gain Layla the daughter of al-Judi by force, hand her over to Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr; so he gained her and handed her over to him, and he was enraptured by her and preferred her above his other wives, until they complained of him to A'isha, and she reproached him for that, and he said: By Allah, it is as though I sip from her front teeth the seeds of the pomegranate! Then he became cold toward her, until she complained of him to A'isha, so A'isha said to him: O Abd al-Rahman, you loved Layla and went to excess, and you hated her and went to excess; so either deal justly with her or equip her to return to her family! So he equipped her and sent her to her family, and she was a Ghassanid.

And he witnessed the Battle of the Camel together with his sister A'isha.

[Abu] (2) Muhammad ibn Abi al-Qasim al-Dimashqi informed us by permission: my father informed us: Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Samarqandi narrated to us: Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Naqqur informed us: Isa ibn Ali informed us: Abdullah ibn Muhammad informed us: Ibn A'isha narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ziyad narrated to us: that Mu'awiya wrote to Marwan that he should pledge allegiance to Yazid ibn Mu'awiya, so Abd al-Rahman said: You have brought it in the manner of Heraclius! Will you pledge allegiance to your sons?! So Marwan said: O people, this is the one of whom Allah, exalted is He, says: ﴿And he who says to his parents: Fie upon you both﴾ (3) to the end of the verse. So A'isha became angry and said: By Allah, it is not he, and if I wished to name him I would name him.

And al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar related, he said: Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Zuhri narrated to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather, who said: Mu'awiya sent to Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq a hundred thousand dirhams, after he had refused the pledge of allegiance to Yazid ibn Mu'awiya, but Abd al-Rahman returned them and refused to take them, and he said: I will not sell my religion for my worldly portion! And he went out to Mecca and died there, before the pledge to Yazid was completed. And his death was sudden, from a sleep in which he slept, at a place called Hubshi (4), about ten miles from Mecca; and he was carried to Mecca and buried there. And when the news of his death reached his sister A'isha she set out to Mecca as a pilgrim, and she stood at his grave and wept over him and recited the verses (5):

And we were like the two boon-companions of Jadhima for a long while … of time, until it was said: They will never part. Then when we parted, it was as though I and Malik … for the length of our companionship had not spent a single night together. Indeed, by Allah, had I been present with you I would have buried you where you died, and had I been present with you I would not have wept over you.

And his death was in the year fifty-three, and it is said: in the year fifty-five, and it is said: in the year fifty-six, and the first is the more common.

The three of them brought it out.
