Hadiths on Sighting the Crescent

This section contains a single authentic hadith on sighting the crescent. It gives the governing rule of the fasting month: «Fast when you see it, and break the fast when you see it, but if the sky is overcast and you cannot see it, then act on estimation». The start and the end of the fast therefore rest on actual sighting, with estimation as the fallback.
